Thursday 4th June
Tour day today! We get picked up about 9. There is a little confusion about whether we are to be picked up. We are in the van, then out. Then asked for the ticket we already handed the lady. But eventually we leave. We stop by the tour office and switch busses and passengers. Down a boulevard there are over 100 monuments/statues. We stop at some Aztec ruins that now has a church built on the grounds and then at a square that has at least 6 churches around it. Some have sunk into the ground in sections. They look definitely off balance. We then continue out of the city limits to near the sun and moon pyramids. We pass poorer areas with lots of brightly coloured sides to their buildings. We stop at an authentic silver and statue shop where we see how they weave and where the process of making silver jewellery and obsidian statues is explained. They also explain how they get honey water from carving out the heart of a type of cactus and ferment it in 1 day to make a type of alcohol. There are/where a lot of uses for the fibres and poky bits.
Then off to the Aztec city ruins. It seems the base supports and the temples are the main things that have survived. There is still restoration work being done. It is very hot in exposed areas, but we make it up the sun and moon temples. There are peddler's everywhere selling their souvenirs. Sadly none sell water until the end! It's after 3pm by the time we get to the restaurant for lunch/tea. It's buffet or off the menu. Both offer few vegetarian options.
When we are dropped off near our hostel we walk around the square and check things out! So many huge old buildings!
