When we arrived at surf camp, which was located somewhere north of Coffs Harbour in a place Ox Experience referred to as 'Spot X' we were treated to a very tasty buffet lunch, after which we were told we would be heading into the water for our surf lesson straight away. After a quick briefing we were given our surf boards, which were really heavy and 8 foot long - apparently it's easier for beginners to use longer boards, we're not so sure!
We had the lesson on the sand that you see on Aussie soaps so often, and its starts to hurt your knees after a while when you have to slide along the sandy surf board and jump up over and over and over again. We both had loads of fun in the water trying to catch waves, but neither of us managed to stand up for more than half a second, and ended up doing lots of surfing whilst sitting or kneeling, as well as wiping out too many times. I'm sure the instructors must've got fed up of trying to tell us how to stand!
That evening was spent relaxing with everyone from our bus, playing cards and being scared to death every time a possum appeared from the bushes or a huge cockroach-type thing came flying at us.
The day after our surf lessons we realised just how much you use your muscles trying to get on and stay on the surf board when we could barely move through the painful ache in our arms and stomachs! Thankfully our bus trip to Coffs Harbour, our next stop (and last stop before Sydney and Christmas) was only half an hour so we spent most of the day relaxing!
We didn't do much in Coffs, other than have a look around, wander to the beach and visit the cinema (where we saw Avatar - brilliant film!) Whilst we were in Coffs Harbour though, Oz Experience rang us to ask if we would move from the Christmas Eve bus into Sydney to an extra one they'd added on Christmas Day as they had overbooked - I think you can guess our reaction, and therefore our answer!
On Christmas Eve, we caught our last Oz Experience bus and headed for Sydney…
