We had a bit of an eventful time finding the campervan depot, the bus driver got confused and said he would drop us right outside which he did but it wasnt the one we wanted, nothing ever runs smoothly foe amy and heiki. Any way we finally got there and picked up octopus! and as it was nearly valentines day they threw in some fluffy pink handcuffs and a pack of cards not tacky at all then.
Our first stop was Geelong a lovley little town with a gorgeous waterfront with all the little painted people, we didnt stay long so next it was on to Torquay, We stayed here for our first night and had the luxuxry of showers and a camp kitchen which we soon wouldnt have. We both liked Torquay it reminded me of being in cornwall again everyone but everyone was a surfer!
In the morning we got up early and headed to apollo bay stopping at Anglsea, Aireys inlet (where the light house is) and Fairhaven which had the most amazing beach it went on for miles, aparently there was a nudist beach there but we gave that one a miss. From there we carried on through Lorne to sheok falls in the otoways national park it was about a 30 minuite walk through creepy crawly filled land then it opend out into a really prettty waterfall although it was quite dry it was still really good to go and see. We had a quick stop to look at a shipwreck and wander around apollo bay then we stayed the night at lavers hill it was strting to resemble England outside the sky was white and it was drizziling (scary).
The next drive was pretty spectacular stopping firstly at the 12 Apostles it was really misty so we could hardly see them but you can only see 8 from lamd anyway. Our next three stops were loch ard gorge which was gorgeous but huge waves. London bridge which used to be connected to the land but collapsed in 1992 and then we drove onto the grotto bay of martys and bay of islands which was really amazing. So far the camper was doing great and suprisingly we have both slept so much better than in the hostel.
Our next drive was to Warrnambool a gorgeous town with a fantastic beach ans some huge houses we will definatly be visiting again, our plan was to stay the night but as we wanted to drive the coastal way to adelaide we headed upto the Grampians a day early.
We arrived in the Grampians at teatime and here we stayed on a camp ground literally! The only facilities were pitt toilets, which i made the mistake of going to in the pitch black and there looking down on me was the biggest spider i have ever seen in my life even heiki was shocked at the sheer size! i dont need to explin my reaction do i....? In the morning we woke upto two kangaroos having a bit of a scuffle outside our van it was so funny they were like real boxers!
Our first day in the Grampians was a tiring one, while you were all getting ready for bed we were climbing what felt like mount everest it was only a pinnicle but it was 5.5 km and it was v v steep!there was no specific track and it was really hard work but the views made it all worth while. We then went onto mckenzie falls we couldnt walk to the base as my feet were in shreds from the pinnicle, so we did the look out which was equally as good. Next stop Reed and Boroka lookout we never knew we liked views so much but when they are this good you cant not. After all that walking we went back to the campsite for an early one as we were setting off at 7am for mt Gambier.
It was my turn to drive in the morning, it was very misty and cool we were leaving just at the right time as it was forcast thunderstorms for the next few days. As it was early there were kangaroos hopping round all over the place we nearly hit a couple they just spring out from no where!
A few hours later we arrived in mt gambier just across the border in south Australia and it was bloody freezing (apparently its always like that) We had already heard about this lake that turns blue in the summer but as it was such a grey day we didnt think it would be blue but we went to have a look and sure enough it was the mopst gorgeous turquoise colour. It turns this colour every november but nobody knows why?
From there we drove up the limestone coast through millicent, beachport and robe finally stopping at Kingston for the night. We had got talking to an aussi in the Grampians who told us there was a fish and chop ahop that won best in australia so it would have been rude not to try them they were good but noithing beats Yorkshire fish and chips and the guy that worked there even said vinegar ruins them WHAT?? As it was our last night we stayed on a proper campsite with showers! we were pretty stinking after 2 days and got plasters on cheap wine 9 dollors for 4 litres pure poison ha ha!
