We left Mui Ne at lunchtime for an afternoon bumping around on the bus to Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City. Unfortunately we arrived at rush hour so it took ages for us to get into the centre of the city, which is huge! And even madder than Hanoi - apparently 70 people a month die in moped accidents here (don't worry we didn't hire one!). There are even less rules of the road, our bus missed its turn off from a four lane motorway in rush hour but still managed to reverse half a mile back to it!!
We took a trip out to Cu Chi Tunnels this morning which is where guerilla fighters hid and fought from during the French and then the American Wars. Despite our dislike for organised tours it turned out to be really worthwhile and value for money. We were first shown a video about life in Cu Chi and how it was affected by the war (we were glad not to be Americans in the audience!), before looking around the area. We were able to see bunkers and various entrances to the tunnels - ridiculously small - some were fake and held very nasty traps for the American soldiers. The tunnel that we actually went down had been specially widened for Westerners! However it was still a very small opening and about half our group chose not to go down. We had to walk stooped with our backs horizontal - hard work on the hamstrings! Definitely not for the claustrophobics as at times it was pitch black and you couldn't see anything in front of you, instead having to feel your way round! Amazing that some people managed to live down there for 10 years!
On our way back we were dropped off at the War Remnants museum, which held a chilling and eye-opening account of the war crimes that occurred during the American War.
We had planned to visit the Reunification Palace as well but unfortunately it had closed by the time we got there, probably a good thing as we'd already had our fair share of culture for the day!
Tomorrow we head down into the Mekong Delta on a 2 day trip, which will finish in Phnom Phen, the capital of Cambodia.
