There were a few last minute things we wanted to do so we headed down to Kailua first. It was a humid but overcast day. We wandered around until lunchtime and found a cafe overlooking the water for lunch.
As we headed back up to the Kohala Coast, we stopped at another resort called Mauna Lani. There is a field of historical petroglyphs in here. These are early stone carvings done by the ancient Hawaiians. They are a very important part of Gawaiian history so it is good to see they have been preserved in this way.
We also stopped in at our ‘sister’ Resort, Mauna Kea. Is is just up the road. A shuttle runs between the 2 every night so guests can dine in either. This resort was very similar to ours.
When we had finally seen and done everything we wanted to do on this island, we went for a swim. We walked down to the private beach at our resort where it is very calm and watched the sun begin to set. There have been warnings on the radio all day for ‘strong waves which will threaten lives and property’. I think it was for the north coast of each island and was due to be an issue at 6.30pm when the tide came in. Just in case it was going to affect our beach, we got out before 6.30pm and moved up to the main pool. It was really warm in - I think it must be heated. There is a bar next to the pool so we got a cocktail, sat in the pool and watched the sunset until clouds got in the way. Then we went up to the adults only pool on the next level. It was also very warm.
The big island has been fantastic! It is so interesting and I have been fascinated by the volcanoes and lava everywhere.
We have an early start in the morning for the first plane to Honolulu and then on to Sydney. See you all there.
