Phill and Sue's 'allseven' Continents Adventure
Whilst planning this trip, we agreed that there would be several occasions when we would stand back and say - 'wow that was amazing.' Today was one of those days.
Early doors and very choppy waters, we rode out to Shark Alley in search of the Great Whites. We clung for dear life as we rode the waves in stormy conditions. Lady luck shone down on us as we dropped anchor and the weather broke to give us great visability and not too rocky a boat. Fish heads tossed and wetsuits on, Sue volunteered us to be first in the cage. 15 degrees C, trust us, is very very cold. We didn't have to wait long for our first 'up close and personal' experience. The skipper yelled at us 'divers down down, straight ahead.' A 2 meter long female passed by us. Spitting out salt water and still aclimatising to the arctic chill, we resurfaced with beaming smiles!
Our group was only seven. We held our own with the Germans and rotated for the next hour or two. We lost track of time and even forgot the cold. Three sharks, all female, circled our boat in unpredictable fashion. The longest 7 meters... OK, OK 3.2 meters. Its difficult to explain, but it really was bloody great. The last passing of one of these overgrown fish brushed our cage. Phill couldn't help but stick his arm out for a quick squeeze. The little buggar got away. Should have seen the skippers face when this came up in conversation later!
Guys, this was absolutely brilliant. Ahhhhh.
The day hasn't finished yet as we type away here at the cafe. We drove across a beautiful mountain pass, through the wineland town of Franschoek and on to Stellenbosch. We ate great food and enjoyed fine wine. Today we have realised we are not 20 any more - nor are we backpackers in the truest sense. Where's the Champagne baaabe?
Bring it on.
