Bullfrog, Mixed Feet, Ox Intestine, or Cattle D**k - the choice is yours. At least it was ours as we headed out for dinner the other night.
Shanghai has offered us as much in the way of fresh experiences. We take our hats off to anywhere that can make us sit up and take notice after so long on the road.
Where to start? We are British, so the weather. Its cold. What else. This isn't meant to sound negative in any way, but the Chinese do lack in the manners department. Yes, they push and shove in a manner which would be unacceptable on our island. But its more than that. Imagine a pretty, young girl walking along the street. Knee high boots, tight jeans, made up, looking the part of a cosmopolitan chick. She draws back the contents of her throat, gargles and fires the unwanted matter from her mouth. Not pleasant. Similar noises echo all around, morning, noon and night.
The language. Yes, thats worth a mention. It is quite impossible to get anywhere without your destinaiton written in Chinese characters. The days route is planned before leaving your hotel. Most people, it seems, know one word in English - watches. It is muttered around us at every turn.
The driving is crazed too. It would make dull reading to try and explain the traumas at each intersection. So lets just say the driving behavior is nuts. Completely nuts.
Despite these observations, the people are fine. They keep to themselves, other than the odd elbow, only really paying any attention to you when you push them back. Try exiting a subway train. First day of the sales?
We have plied the markets looking at watches and handbags for days, inbetween sightseeing. It is mayhem. Entering chaotic malls, you are bombarded with 'buy watch, handbag, Gucci, Vuitton, Rolex, number one quality'. The bartering is premier league too. You need your wits about you.
Waiting to use a public toilet, Phill stood patiently outside the door until a man vacated. The door swung open as a dark, wrinkled man stepped out. A cigarette burning in his mouth, he was holding hands with what Phill thought was a child. It was a monkey.
In a nutshell, we are loving China.
Needless to say, this fun can not last forever, so tomorrow (Monday) we fly to Wuhan. No, we'd never heard of it either.
