So we last left you in Surfers where it was raining and took a short bus trip (on which it was still raining thanks to some leaking window seals) to Byron Bay, which suprise suprise was also raining. Once again we found ourselves in a dorm room with two guys who'd been following us / we'd been following down the East Coast which was random but nice! It was still raining the following morning but we decided to brave the harsh conditions (ha!) and walk to the lighthouse in Byron, which was also the most Easterly point in Australia. It was a stunning walk and despite taking photos in the wrong place initially (we thought we'd got to the most easterly point....wrong we were!!), we soon found the 'Most Easterly point in Australia' sign and posed for some more photos! We also got to see dolphins in the water from the viewpoint by the lighthouse which was really special :)
On Friday night in Byron we went to Chabad which was a really bizarre but fun experience! Any awkwardness there was soon washed away when the only non jewish person there knocking over the mechitza between the girls and boys during the service...! About an hour into the meal, Debra and I were getting increasingly concerned that there didn't seem to be any chicken around (we'd not had meat or chicken for nearly a month at this point and were relying on Chabad to provide us with some much needed protein!) so we proceeded to fill ourselves up on Challah and Salad (alice only with the salad...debra is still scared of most vegetables but spinach has been added to the 'approved' list!)! Just as we were just about to expload from challah overload, our first taste of chicken in Australia soon arrived, along with roast potatos! wooo! :)
We finally got to spend time on the beach on shabbat as the rain stopped for just about long enough to lie out and top up our pretty non existent tans and we also wondered around Byron Bay which is a really lovely beachside town - really chilled and great place to be! We headed out that evening to check out the Byron nightlife with a few people from the hostel and ended up in Cheeky Monkeys where the dance floor is the tables and stage area! Fun times!
On Sunday we checked out the market in Byron which was really hippyish and quirky! At the end of the market, there was a massive drum circle with lots of 'happy' people (and some very hairy women) dancing and flowing feely to the music! The following day, we ended up (thanks to debra!!) on a tour of Nimbin on the 'Happy Coach'....i wasn't too sure what we'd let ourselves in for but lets just say in Nimbin, we could have bought enough illegal substances to fill our backpacks! The place itself was really quirky - like a smaller but more intense version of Camden. It wasn't exactly our kind of place but was really cool to see and the rest of the people on our happy coach seemed very happy indeed by the end of the tour!!
We left Byron that evening on another overnight greyhound coach heading for Sydney!
