The Lonely Planet describes Nelson as NZ's most liveable city. If that's the case then where is everybody? We went out for a drink on a Saturday night and the whole place was deserted.
Nelson is geographically the centre point of NZ. The exact spot is marked with a spire.
The main reason for staying in Nelson was its proximity to the Abel Tasman National Park. Yes you've guessed it......another walk.
We drove to Marahau and caught the water taxi to Bark Bay. The walk back to Marahau takes 6.5 hours. We managed it in 5. Apart from the odd sandy bay the walk was disappointing. Most of the time you're walking through forest and cannot see the coastline. After a few hours this gets a bit boring.
The best part of the walk was crossing Torrent Bay once the tide had gone out. For some reason I expected the ground to be dry. WRONG! In the end I resorted to taking my shoes and socks off and rolling up my trousers to cross the numerous channels of water.
