Just before we arrived in Christchurch the city made the national news as a number of tourists had been attacked coz 'they talked with funny accents'. Thankfully we had no run ins with the locals. In fact I'd be bold enough to say I quite liked Christchurch.
Most of the cities we've been to in NZ do not have what I call a natural centre. Christchurch has Cathedral Square. This is a great place to get your bearings and watch some of the street entertainment on offer.
The city has an English feel to it and you can even go punting on the River Avon.
The Antartic Centre is also worth a visit. You get to experience a storm with a wind chill of -18 degrees. Coats are optional.
Hamner Springs is nearby and a favourite get away for people from Christchurch. We spent a day and a night there and made the most of the hot spring baths. Very relaxing!
