We left Ushiuaia early - a nervous start as there was no bus terminal so not really sure we were in the right place!
Luckily we were and we headed off on the bus with a border crossing and a ferry crossing ahead of us before we reached Punta Arenas. If we had thought Ushuaia a barren land then the journey across the border was in a more extreme category. Not too much excitement other than me falling over while sober on steps by the ferry. Also we came across the sniffer dogs for the first time as Chile had very strict "no raw food" policy to safeguard its agricultural industry.
We got to Punta Arenas tired from the prvious late nights and the journey and after being enthusiatically welcomed by Marcelo headed for a good meal then bed.
The original reason for visiting Punta Arenas was to visit a King penguin colony but this urge had now been satisfied in Ushiaua so we were left with a free day to fill.
Punta Arena turned out to be a good place to spend a day - dodging cruise passengers in the port area, following the tsunami safe route to the mirador, learning about the founding families while we strolled around the town courtesy of numerous blue plaques and a visit to a museum.
We then headed towards home via the cemetry - knowing more about those buried there thanks to our exploratioons during the day - and the Ovejero monument commemorating the sheep farms who started the wealth in the area.
After only having pancakes and cake we headed for some proper food in a seafood restaurant before retiring ready for our bus to Puerto Natales the next day.
