I arrived safely in Bangkok at 4AM and found a taxi to my hostel. After a couple of hours sleep the hostel owner woke me up at 9AM telling me he was sorry but they had over booked so I couldnt stay another night. I decided to get my bags and go to the main street Khao San rd to find a hostel there, on the way I saw many people with water guns and everyone was soaked, but I couldnt understand why. After finally finding a hostel which wasn't fully booked I finally understood what was going on, I had arrived at the start of Songkran (thai new year) and they celebrate over 6 days by having a mass waterfight, and I was staying in the centre of the action. My hostel was the best so far on my trip. It had a roof top pool so to get away from the chaos I retreated to here. After making fridnds that night we all went out onto "the road" fully prepared for getting drenched...and we did!!
Water guns, buckets, hoses anything that could dispense water was used and drinks were cheap so many people were very drunk, music blared from every bar and people crowded the street.
The following days were the same so I was unable to leave my hostel and see any sights unless I wanted get wet...again.
Songkran is good fun and everyone joins in and they also have a clay like substance to wipe on peoples faces but I think it should last a day, maximum 2 because it is exhausting being wet all of the time but i am glad to have experienced it especially as it was not expected. I haven't had much thai food yet due to Songkran but I tried pad thai which is very popular in thailand and consists of noodles and beansprouts.
To get away from the madness I have booked a 15 hour bus to Krabi tomorrow it is in the south.
Inventory: 65% had to remove some Indian snacks for the flight.

MumStanley Wow! How did you ever sleep with all that going on. At least the weather is hot so you would dry off pretty quickly. What an experience. I can't believe you accidentally arrived in the middle of an important Thai festival. The hostel sounds great. Carry on exploring.
