The wanderings of Alice
Fraser Island was described to us by our guide as the largest sandpit in the world...in many ways I guess he's right. Fraser Island consists completely of sand, which at times is hard to believe as you drive through pristine rainforest. We decided to do a tour after hearing some horror stories about self drive 4x4 cars crashing, falling over, getting stuck in sand etc as their inexperienced drivers don't really know how best to control them. However, it was still good fun whizzing down 75 mile beach in our 4x4 truck watching out for humpback whales passing out at sea. We visited all the hot-spots, Eli Creek, Indian Head, Champagne Pools and went swimming in the naural lakes. We were also lucky enough to see two wild Dingos (wild dogs) going about their business. We stayed in permanent tents which inside were more glamourous than half of our hostel rooms! We dragged ourselves out of bed the next morning to go and see the sun rise, and it was well worth it as the sky seemed to bleed with light as the sun popped it's head over the horizon. Fraser Island, named after Captain Fraser who later died by a spear in his back thrown by an Aboriginal (poor fellow), is a very beautiful place and thankfully has become a protected area so no more logging takes place.
Next along the coast was Brisbane which is where we are now. It was a bit strange arriving in a large city as for a few months now we've been travelling through pretty remote areas. It's a nice city, lots of shops, museums and cultural art centres. We've been lucky to hit the Brisbane festival so there's alot of live acts going on around the place. And yesterday I spent my birthday here too. Yes, 22, gosh that is old. Sounds considerably more mature than 21..ar well. We had a good day which consisted mainly of visiting lookouts, botanical gardens, art galleries, theatres and curry houses that supplied wine. I also had a birthday cake in the form of a chocolate muffin complete with candles from Jo. Altogether a great day! Oh and if anyones wondering, any birthday contributions to the Alice Roblin travelling fund would be greatly appriciated. Just send it to 12 Hawthorn Avenue, Neath, S.Wales, and my assistant (a.k.a Mum) will sort it from there..!! Thankyou!!
