The wanderings of Alice
Far inferior to the original....but it has some good points. First port of call was at Coffs Harbour. We stayed a night and the next day got a bus to Dorrigo, a little village around an hour inland from the coast. Here we were picked up by Jenni, our WOOFING farm host who was going to be taking care of us for the next few days. Jenni lives on a beautiful spot of land with gorgeous views all around. She lives with 2 goats, 2 horses, a dog called Chillie, bunny, guinea pig, chickens, oh and her 17 year old bubbly daughter Tjirra. It's a pretty aboriginal name as her Dad is of aboriginal decent. We did a range of jobs here but the weirdest was stripping branches of hemp to be used for paper making! Jenni is an artist and one of her activities is natural paper making, for which the hemp is used for. We'll just have to scrub our shoes for all traces of it before going through customs! While there, we watched Tjirra play football, sorry soccer, for the local team on the weekend, and they won, yay! It's really good to see girls playing so well and with so much passion- sport is taken quite seriously in Australia. We walked around Dorrigo National park, helped Jenni with her after school art classes (it was like being 5 all over again!) and watched some calfs being born in the field next door...aww!
After a break in the countryside we headed further south to Port Macquarie where we only stayed one night but made sure we visited the koala hospital. You can't really get enough of these cute guys. Some had suffered burns in bush fires, some had been attacked by dogs or involved in car accidents and others had a case of 'wet bottom'. We watched them get fed and heard some stories about each of them before dashing off to catch our coach to Sydney.
We arrived late at night and saw the city all lit up- a pretty impressive sight. The next morning we visited Paddy's Markets (loads of pretty cheap stalls selling most stuff that you can spend hours looking at, then walking away with the sillyest hat you could find). Then we went up the sky tower and were lucky enough to catch the city at sunset. We popped across to the Blue Mountains over the next few days, about a 2 hour train ride out of the city. We saw some pretty spectacular views across the valleys and the mountains really are blue! Apparently it occurs when the sun hits the oil droplets released by the gum trees and this causes a blue haze. We explored around on old London buses...as you do! Back in Sydney we spent some time at the coast at Bondi and Watson Bay. Then we had a day of culture at the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and various museums, gardens and art galleries. Oh, and not forgetting (the best bit by far!!)(not really I'm not that sad!), we met Steff, Toadie and Boyd from Neighbours!! Had photos taken with them, got their autographs and stood on the street corner chatting as we spied them catching taxis to the airport...not obsessed, honest! (Sorry to all those who have no idea what I'm talking about!)
