I do need to point out that I'm writing the majority of these posts on my phone or David's iPad, so excuse any spelling please haha, I noticed millions of mistakes in that last post, but I'm sat on the top (deck?) of a bunk bed typing with a light that turns off if you don't move for a while. So, so, Freo. After our night of revelry and new friends and cheap wine, I awoke to no hangover (YES), and an 11am date at the prisons. Off we went, my history student hat on and it was so darn interesting! Originally built by convicts sent over by our fair old isle, Freo was a working prison until 1991, long after it was handed to WA government by ye olde colonial powers. We saw typical 19th century cells, including the gallows, the flogging stands and work rooms, as well as Murals on the wall where prisoners has been allowed to paint just before the prison closure in '91. Due to it being made of soft limestone, it was pretty easy to dig and break out of, and we heard many tales of attempted and successful escapes! The guide was so amazing, we decided to stay for an extra tour (only $8 extra to do both tours), in which we learnt more about the women's prison as well as prolific prisoners, such as one who escaped so many times they put him in an 'unbreakable' cell of nails and layers of wood....which he promptly broke free of (yes, really!) and went on the run for another 2 years before becoming a local celebrity! Buzzing with information, we went for another stroll around the town, in the beautiful sunshine before heading back for our first hostel provided ($2) Barbie!! Followed by a potential night in Little Creatures, (large harbour bar and brewery) before our last full day in Freo! I must now sadly climb down from my top bunk! Heading away from the hostel of dreams back to Perth on Monday (YHA Perth does have a pool though?!) to try and seek work, visit the zoo and more bike riding!
Accomodation: weekend in YHA Fremantle Prison
Highlights: hammock lazing in the sun, new friends Matt and Lloyd and the prison tours.
