31/3/09; Got up at 6.30 and got ready and checked out then waited for bus which came about 7.15am. It took us to the trip companies office where we paid the rest of the money and then got on a big green bus with the 12 other people we were travelling with- a mixture but mainly older couples. Plus we met our driver- a Dutch guy called Fritz who was hilarious and really friendly. We got ferry over to Fraser Island- took about 30 minutes. Fraser Island is the biggest sand island in the world- 90% of the surface is sand. No real roads- drive on the sand and the main highway is the sandy beach. First we drove to Lake Birrabeen- a beautiful, huge freshwater lake- with clear waters and white sands!! We had a swim. Then we drove to Central Station where we learnt about some of the Islands history and did a walk along a creek and in the rainforest. the driver also told us all about the plants and wildlife. Fraser Island is now a World Heritage Site. Then we drove to a camp near the beach for a buffet lunch- very nice!! We got chatting to a Dutch girl on the trip who was nice. Then we stopped at a freshwater creek going into the sea where we could swim again. Then we went to Maheno Shipwreck which is a shipwreck on the beach from the 1930's. Lil alex was standing at the front for a photo when the tide come in quick and started pulling him under the boat- so his clothes got drenched and he cut his hand trying to stop himself- so that was a bit scary. We then went to Indian Head which is a rocky lookout point- amazing views out to sea and back on the island which was full of sand. Then we arrived at the camp about 5.30- we were sharing a tent that is raised off the floor by a wooden platform so felt quite safe from all the spiders, snakes and dingoes (of which I saw 2- they are well cool!). The bus driver done us a nice dinner of salads and I had a vege lasagne and we all sat around chatting- listening to the drivers funny tales. We went to bed 9.30. Not a cloud in the sky all day!
1/4/09: Breakfast was served between 6-7am so another early start!! Nice breakfast of toast and yoghurt, etc. Then we left on bus about 7.30. We went to the Pinnacles first which are made up of all coloured sands which was cool! Then we drove along beach and parked up before walking through some woodlands onto a desert (well sand dune but there was sand everywhere). We walked 1.8km across it to Lake Wabby which was possibly the most peaceful, beautiful place I've seen- There was a really steep sand slope down and then a big lake of green water with all trees behind. We went for a dip to cool off and chill there before a 2.8km walk back to the bus through the woods! Then we went back to Central Station and done another long walk along the creek to where Fritz had set up a picnic of wraps for lunch which was nice. Then we went back to Lake Birrabeen for a last swim- once again a lovely day with no clouds!! The Fraser Island trip has probably been my favourite so far! Then we got the ferry back to Hervey Bay where they dropped us back off at the hostel. We checked in and had showers and then went to get food.
