Alan and Amy's Excellent Adventure
We arrived in Valdivia at around 8am, after a 12 hour bus journey. Though we managed to get about 5 hours sleep, we were relieved that we could check in to our room immediately as we wanted to get back in bed for a few hours.
We woke up again about midday, then spent the afternoon pottering around the town, and catching up on the internet. The town is pretty small, and there isn´t a great deal to see in the centre, but we had heard that it´s a uni town so we decided to try out the night life. We had a few drinks in a cool little jazz bar, then went for some food and found a familiar group of faces in the takeaway.
We had initially seen a group of girls in Queenstown, New Zealand, who then caught us up a week or two later whilst we were working in Fox Glacier. We hadn´t really spoken to them too much apart from saying hello, but when we were waiting for our flight to Santiago I saw them walking around the departures lounge. We thought it was strange that we had seen them all around New Zealand, but when we sat next to them on the bus to Valdivia, we though it was about time we introduced ourselves properly. They had since joined a couple more friends from home, and were travelling around in a group of six.
We went back to the same bar with them for a while, then out to a small club. A couple of the girls were from Dundee university, so we chatted about the town for a while, had a drink and a dance, then went home. Back at the guesthouse, our key didn´t fit in the gate and we had to climb over the fence. We weren´t drunk either, it really didn´t fit!
The next day we slept in, then went into town for a McDonalds - Amy´s hangover comfort food. Once we were done we went down to the fish market on the river. This is the towns primary attraction, as a big group of sealions gather around here each day to feed of the scraps. At first we saw a few on a platform below us, along with a few vultures, but as we walked along the riverside we saw loads of them right next to the pathway. Though we didn´t risk getting too close, we still managed to get within six feet of them. I think we probably could have touched them if we had wanted as they seemed pretty docile. A few dogs were running up to them barking and the sealions just carried on napping.
Once we´d had our fill of sealions, we walked back through town so that I could buy a football shirt I wanted, then went back to cook spag bol for tea. We had a lazy evening, then got to bed as we were up early the next day to catch the bus to Bariloche, Argentina...
