Adventures with Andrea and John
Enjoyed learning more about the Maori culture today and seeing all the geothermal phenomenon. Isabel and Brian drove us to Te Puia where we were welcomed by Maori dancers and challenged with a war chant. The show was in a Maori long-house much like our Haida Indians. They sang and danced; it was interesting and the costumes were great. We saw some kids getting traditional tattoos on their legs. Some of the adults had the black paint "tattoos" on their faces. We then followed a Maori leader on a tour of the grounds. First we went into the kiwi house. Kiwis are nocturnal so it was dark inside. We weren't supposed to make noise or tap on the glass but some unruly children did. We were glad we had been to the Willowbank Nature Reserve in Christchurch last week. After the kiwi house we walked over to the mud pond. The temp was 95 degrees C. The mud bubbled away. Further along, we saw the geysers spurting hot water out at regular intervals. Similar to the ones in Yellowstone. We called Isabel and they had just pulled into the parking lot. After the gift shop we found them and off to another adventure!
