After four hours of driving we reached the most easterly point of the north island at East Cape. We saw the lighthouse up on the hill ahead of us and presumed the sea was on the other side, but the only problem was, we were stuck at a dead end on the other side of the hill. We ate our lunch disappointed that we had come so close, but not close enough to the most easterly point. As we were driving away we noticed a sign where a walking path led up to the lighthouse through private land that we had missed before. We parked up and walked the 25 minutes up hundreds and hundreds of steps to the top. Like most situations where there is a view to be seen, we went on a foggy day so couldn't see much but we took in the view of East island as much as we could. This is the place where the sun comes up to be seen first! At least we made it and made the journey worthwhile! We are now travelling back west and then up the Coromandel peninsula.
