We're not sure whether it was the salad in Koh Kong City, the super-rich banana custard with honey at the rainbow lodge, or the anti-malarial tablets that we've been taking since arriving in Cambodia, but something has upset Aidan's appetite. It started as nasty indigestion and developed into an inability to swallow, so Jess has dragged us away from the hammocks and we are now waiting for a bus to the capital.
It's only been a few days since we arrived back in the village, and we're off again. It's frustrating to leave now as a few of our projects are really starting to eventuate. We've been flat out getting things organised for an open day for the nearly finished community centre, and Jess has been madly teaching all the mothers of the community how to keep their houses, kids and water clean and healthy.
As well as us, Yaara and the latest new volunteer, Ronni, have been busy with a couple of projects aimed at providing an alternative source of income for a few of the villagers. One of these involves cooking a sort of caramel sauce to sell to tourists in the bigger cities. The other involves cooking breads and cakes in a home-made wood-fire oven to sell within the local community.
The staff have also been busy creating a strong community council. The idea is that the council will start to become more involved in managing the village and help to sustain it after the organisation eventually moves on. The group is made up of a few of the cleverer, and in some cases controversial members of the community, and it is hoped that they will eventually collaborate to solve issues that arise, introduce and develop new projects for generating work and income, and most of all help to soothe the difficult phasing-out period for the organisation.
All the hard work is causing a bit of tension and stress among the staff at the moment, and both of us were starting to feel like getting out again for a couple of days. So, seeing as Aidan wouldn't be much help laying in the hammock all day everyday and not eating, we aren't feeling too bad about taking off to see one of the western doctors in Phnom Penh.
