My African adventures have taken a little detour via South East Asia- namely Thailand and Vietnam, which is where I am now, enjoying the sun, the sea and the spice.
I left Uganda rather reluctantly, with the promise that one day I will return. Unfortunately the opportunity for them to visit me is unlikely to present itself, but it does give me reason to go back to my African home.
The leaving was made a little easier by a returned volunteer and lovely guy, Greg, accompanying me for a long weekend in Kampala and Entebbe. We had a fun few days discovering places various boda-boda drivers took us to, dancing, making the most of my last moments in the country I've come to love.
And so I boarded the plane to a new country, new continent and to new company, in the form of Tom (who I met at the Lodge) and his best mate Mark. There, we discovered Bangkok, with our very own Thai tour guide- their friend Bina, who's lively company I very much enjoyed. Bina showed us the highlights of buzzing vibrant Bangkok; we dined by the waterfront, drank on the 31st floor roof top bar and bathed in our hotel pool overlooking the city. We'd walk through the little streets, being followed by calls of "Massaaaage", new smells every meter (some more pleasant than others) and visit the protests- basically a chilled music festival that Singha beer pays the protestors to be at. The King is practically God. His face is everywhere, normally decorated with gold, but occasionally crafted out of a hedge too. Woe be to you if someone catches you speaking ill of him! Wiring is a bit of a bazaarity. I'm surprised the masts on street corners can bare the weight of the hundreds of wires seamingly connecting nothing to everything.
I think Bangkok is a bit of a Marmite city, and I definitely want to return. Then again, I love organised choas, and non-organised chaos goes down pretty well with me too.
After a few days of city, we all escaped to Phuket, to Bina's parent's beautiful hotel, and the quiet charm of Bangtao beach. A very idyllic peaceful place, where we slept, swam and drank beer. A short, but enjoyable week in Thailand before Tom, Mark and I headed on to Vietnam.
Thank you Bina for showing us your home!
