Today's trip was to Peritio Merino Glacier, probably one of the best known glaciers in Pategonia. It was about an hours drive from el Calafate Initially I was wondering how we would be able to spend a day at the glacier, however as the glacier front runs for 5km it soon became clear there is more than enough to see. An half hour bus ride and an hours boat ride from El Chalten brought us to Glacier Viedna, one of the largest glaciers in South America. As this was my first time on a glacier I expected a flat ice surface, similar to an ice rink. Was I pleasantly surprised when I saw, what I can best describe as, "ice waves" with blue colouring at places. The blue apparently appears where oxygen is trapped.
