Singapore
With only 2 hours sleep in Kuala Lumpur, we left at 2pm to catch our 6pm flight to Singapore. The flight was great, really smooth and only 40 mins long. It was also really easy to get into Singapore with the tube only being S$1.60 to get to the centre. As you probably know by now we don't book accommodation, we always find it as we arrive, this has been successful up to now. But we struggled here as everywhere was so damn expensive, hostels costing around £50 per night. We soon realized that we were in a very western influenced city. We whipped the laptop out and found a cheap hostel in China town, we took a massive trek from the tube stop and to our major disappointment it had work being done to it!!! With sweat oozing from us we were absolutely gutted and sooooo tired. We set off looking again, then luckily we stumbled upon a hotel which was £30 a night and had aircon, TV and kettle!!!! Brilliant! We got into the hotel around 12pm absolutely dead on our feet to the point where our brains could no longer function and we collapsed and slept until 7pm that night. That night we roamed around china town, got some gorgeous local food and went back to bed. I stayed up and listened to the radio playing Murray vs Rodd*** in the semi final and listened to the poor scot lose.
The next day we ventured out into the city to Little India for an amazing Indian! Then headed back on the MRT (Mass Rapid Transport – tube) to the cable wakeboard park on the East coast. Cable wakeboarding is amazing and after a few laps round I attempted the biggest jump in the park, as I took off I leant back too much and ended up with some serious winding! That also happened on the 2nd attempt but by the third attempt I managed to land on the board, well pleased! Mish did really well as it was her first time on the cable and managed a standing start but fell off right at the end of the cable park 3 times! The b***** about cable riding is you have to climb out and walk back to the start if you fall in! Mish had to do this several times and poor little mishee got very frustrated, but she did not give up and managed to get around the circuit twice in the end, very proud! After an hours riding we sampled some gorgeous chicken and beef Satee right next to the sea and then headed on the MRT back to China town. The MRT is the best way to get around, even the furthest points only just exceed S$2, and it is quick and easy to use.
The next day we got up nice and early and headed on the MRT to the Zoo. Here we saw some amazing animals from all over the world in a massive area, including crocodiles, white tigers, lions, chimpanzees, hippo's, sea lions, penguins, polar bears, giraffes elephants and many many more! Our favorites however were the Orang Utans and Carlos the seal who put on an amazing show for us! The amazing thing about the Orang Utans was that they were completely free roaming so could come and go as they pleased but we still managed to get up close to a couple, including a very very cute baby in its mothers arms. We then headed back on the MRT, had some more amazing food and hit the sack.
Today we leave for Australia on a 9 hour plane flight to Cairns, we are still deciding whether to campervan or bus the East coast.
Singapore is a very very clean city with amazing food and very helpful people but be warned the prices are 3 times as much as all other places in SE Asia.
So after 4266 miles of transport including, bus, boat, train and plane (mainly by bus), sleeping in 30 different beds, a few dodgy stomachs but most of all a incredible experience that we will never forget, thanks SE Asia for a great start to our world trip!
Our SE East Asia Travel tips
Always travel with Toilet paper you never know when you will need it
Don't bargain to on the markets as people here are trying to make a living and are very poor compared to Westerner's
Always smile and show respect for each country and their religious beliefs, i.e. don't point your feet at a Buddha in Thailand like I did!
Just turn up you will always get a bed and always for cheaper
Be patient on transport you will sometimes be late and uncomfortable but that's part of the experience.
Get used to fan rooms and no aircon you will save loads!!!
