The rest of the afternoon was then spent visiting sites along the ridge, firstly one of the NZ memorials where a couple of German bunkers can been seen, then onto one of the local farmers properties to see two of the large craters from the mines detonated before the attack and then finally to Mesen itself. Here we visited the church and crypt, most of which were destroyed during the war (like many of the towns around this part of Belgium).
Tomorrow we are off to the Somme, I suspect it is going to be a long day.
