After packing up and pulling out we drove to Penfold's Magill Estate Winery. It's right in the middle of an Adelaide suburb, is about 3 acres in size and has shiraz vines planted in the 1950's which were used for the first Grange wine. Dr Penfold started it is 1844 to grow wine, "For medicinal purposes." And they still actually make wine here. We went to the cellar door and had fun trying a few different reds. We got on well with the guy at the door and he showed us one of the old bottles of 'medicinal wine' which was funny. I'll put the photo of the label up.
J & C were bored but very good to tolerate Mum and Dad having a play so we ate McD's for lunch and then drove to our new stop at Mt Barker in the Adelaide Hills. It's a great little van park next to trees and a cricket oval. It's not busy and we're close to the nice and clean amenities. The owners are friendly. J & C rode around and found bunnies.
After set up we drove over to Hahndorf which is only 10 minutes away. Hahndorf is just wonderful. It's a small town with one long main street in which every place is made of stone. The street is lined by trees and gardens full of spring flowers. The shops are all quaint gift shops, coffee shops, ice cream, small goods and hotels. German sausage features heavily. We bought and ate salami, ice cream and lollies. A especially liked the candle shop which also had wooden Xmas decorations which are hand-made in Germany and she bought some. C had awesome fun making her own candle in another candle shop called, "3 Wishes." It's amazing they have managed to keep such an atmosphere of tradition and German-heritage. It was not busy which makes it more pleasant to visit.
Then we shopped for groceries at the little IGA supermarket in the main street. This re-enforced my new hobby of shopping in little stores. It's fun. The Advertiser, which is the Adelaide paper, are doing a promotion with David Attenborough's DVD's. I have 12/14 now and am excited about collecting the lot.
I made dinner at home in the van as we all watched a movie. Some kangaroo salami from Hahndorf and Chardonnay from Fox Creek made an excellent entree. Surprisingly tiring just wondering around window shopping.
