Within an hour of leaving our campsite this morning we had dropped in altitude so much that everyone removed their jumpers and jackets and settled back into t-shirts and shorts once again. We had a short drive of just a few hours and arrived at the campsite early afternoon in time for lunch.
Mandla was quite excited to see this particular campsite as it's a new edition to the itinerary but I have to say I'm quite disappointed. It's really just a building site with rubble everywhere and basic facilities. It's got very little greenery and no atmosphere.
There is a bar near the entrance which is quite a walk from where we have set up camp and its ok but to use the internet you have to sweet talk the lady in reception to use her computer.
I'm sure when the campsite is finished it will be lovely but it doesn't look like they are getting on with it very quickly so it probably won't be lovely for quite a while!
This afternoon there is the option to do another game drive in the nearby Mikumi National Park but its quite expensive and doesn't promise to be anything too special so Adam and I have opted out and chosen to spend the time relaxing instead.
Elisabeth, Chantelle and Roen have gone on the drive although they also had to hire a 4x4 and guide at some extortionate cost as well as the entrance fee so I'm glad we're not going.
In order to explain what happened when they got back I'll have to tell you what happened when we first met Sarah. On the day we left Vic Falls with the new group Mandla asked each of us to introduce ourselves and say what it is that we would most like to see on our tour. Sarah had already done a tour through South Africa with another company and had been to Kruger National Park where she had seen leopard and many other animals but the one thing she hadn't gotten to see at any point was a lion. So when she introduced herself she said she wanted to see "an f***ing lion".
Now this caused quite a bit of amusement amongst the group. Especially from Roen who wanted her to clarify if she meant she just wanted to see a lion or if she specifically wanted to see lions mating…well, we never really got an answer to that one!
When the group returned from the game drive Sarah was down at the campsite but a few of us where at the bar near the entrance. Roen was practically jumping up and down and clearly enjoying himself very much and we were keen to know what it was all about.
He showed us his camera where he had, not 1 but a whole series; of photo's showing 2 lions mating…he couldn't believe his luck!
We all ran back to the truck to find Sarah and he proudly showed her his photographs gloating that not only had he seen lions, she still hasn't, but they were actually mating…needless to say Sarah was pretty gutted! Haha!
Anyway, tomorrow morning we actually have to drive through the park to get to where we're going. Mandla explained that vehicles are allowed to drive through provided they do not leave the main road or stop at any point.
He tells us he will slow down if we see anything interesting but if he is seen lingering for too long without paying the entrance fee he could get arrested so we'll have to be quick with our cameras. Hopefully we'll get to see more lions!
