Made the long journey north to Berlin and took another sneaky free night's camping at some services just south of the city; the first of many acts we would commit in Germany that we would find to be strictly 'verboten!' (alongside playing ball games at campsites.....'das ist verboten!'.....using shower blocks after 11pm.....'das ist verboten!'.....using the washing up room after 10pm......'das ist sehr verboten!'.....and countless other ridiculous rules that I can't remember).
Anyways, arrived at a nice campsite in Potsdam (on yet another lake) on the outskirts of Berlin and immediatly made use of the bargainous €6.50 ticket to be used throughout the city for one day, and I think even got into Berlin centre before midday! Slightly outraged by the train departing Potsdam a whole minute late but never the less in a positive mood, we set off to explore.
Queued for about an hour to get into the Reichstag building but was well worth the wait with fantastic views over Berlin and a free audio guide (along with the free entry) to give us an overview of the sights of Berlin.
Next on to the Brandenburg Gate and then the holocaust memorial for a slightly more chilling knock to the senses. Angered, saddened and baffled by the true life accounts and how something like that could ever possibly have been allowed to happen we moved on (via some of the remaining sections of the Berlin Wall) to the Topography of Terror which documents Nazi occupation and Hitlers rise to power...still relatively baffled (if not with some degree of context) we decided we had had info overload and headed back to Potsdam for dinner.
Very much enjoyed the day and also enjoyed trying to retrace our steps from the tram station to the campsite in pitch blackness down country lanes with no lighting!...needless to say we got a little lost! (This is obviously something that Abi would never admit to)
