Impressions of Venice:
Sally - Impressed by everything being done by water - trash barges, firetruck barges, suitcase barges, ambulance boats, police boats, dirt/construction boats…And the opera house "La Fenice" - magnifico
Pat - the HEAT. It really was HOT - as in, sit-in-the-shade-and-drip hot.
Jim - The alleyways -some narrow, some wide, always meandering, the plazas… and that water is the means of transport for everything - everyone is either walking or boating. The city was clean, but run down - it was obvious that there was a lot of work needed to keep things going, and it probably cost a lot to do anything.
Abby - My impression from almost 30 years ago was that Venice is a dirty city with dirty water and stray cats everywhere. This time, the city was very much cleaned up - the water was cleaner, the buildings sparkled and had obviously been cleaned, and the only cats we saw were pets. It was a pleasant place with cool architecture and a vibrant core of people (though it seemed that many of the buildings were partially occupied or unoccupied).
Noah - lots of people, lots of gold (in the Basilica and Doge's Palace), we had to pay for water in the restaurant, dirty (brown water - mostly from silt as the canals are 3-6 feet deep with boats churning through them all day)
Zach - lots of rock doves (Pigeons), hot, different with the canals - a different lifestyle

Breendur I remember Venice being pretty dirty too, so maybe they've been working to clean things up. It is certainly a different place with all the canals! It is HOT here in CO today--high of 100º!
Flo Glad you are enjoying the trip...it was beautiful day in PDX today. Cally and I spent some time with Pooh the other day and he wanted lots of attention and was sitting on my lap letting me pet his head, then he tried to bite me! He is mad that he isn't on the trip, I think!
Paul McDonald I also remember two things about Venice (from the mid-60s): a dirty city (at that time) - and a beautiful sunset. I am sure, with all the concern about environment in the past 40 years, that Venice has spent a significant amount to clean up its act.
shannon I remember Venice also being too dirty (from only 15 or so years ago), and have basically taken it off my list of top places to visit again since. But it is good to hear that they seem to have cleaned it up a bit since!
Jeff I was in Venice 5 years ago. I don't remember it being very dirty at that time. Granted we were there in March, before the massive influx of tourists usually hits.
