The bus to Malindi was easy, despite our worries. Got of the bus and started walking the opposite way to the hotel. A local corrected us then followed us to the hotel telling us he was a Somalian Refugee with Asthma. I gave a hundred shillings and he went away. The hotel was very nice however right next to a Mosque, this meant you were woken up every morning at 4 and then 5 and sometimes again later got quite used to it. First afternoon went down to Malindi bay very nice but not long until we picked up some beach boys. They wanted to sell us everything from boat trips, to drugs, to coconuts we bought nothing.
That afternoon tried to find somewhere to eat lunch tricky than you would think. All the places had big menus but only to have a couple of things n ot helped by the lack of electricity. We ended up having fish and chips at a place that had big menu but was only selling fish and chips. Four other travellers at the table next to us we arranged to meet later at I Love Pizza. We had a good night with two danes an irsih girl and an english bloke. The danes were prone to break into song at any occasion. Stayed at the resturant five hours drinking and playing cards. At the end of the night a ex-pat German joined in she was very drunk and failed to grasp any rules and then wanted to play spin the bottle! We left and went to bed.
The next morning woke up feeling fresh despite drinks and prayers. We got a matatu over to Gedi. The Gedi ruins are the remains of a medieval swahalli town now in deep jungle. It reminded me of Angkor Wat on a smaller scale. Got a great view of the site from a tree ttop platform. We also saw the very rare golden rumped elephant shrew. Well we saw it's golden bum a few times. Back to Malindi and we went in search of a resturant it was dark and when we had walked over to other end of twon could not find the place so came back feeling hungry. Ended up at a more local place had a very good curry.
Last day in Malindi we went over to Watamu, Malindi is very Italian and Watamu was even more so. All the little kids speak to you in Italian. It was a very nice beach with a natural lagoon to swim in. It was very nice to be swimming in the indian ocean. The lagoon was made up of lots of little islands which at low tide were all connected by sand banks. Keeleys birthday today had a nice day on the beach in the sun. That evening we ended up back at I Love Pizza they do do very good pizza and nice cheap wine.
