Lance and I stopped at Hotel des Mille Collines, made famous as the building in which more than a thousand people took refuge during the 1994 Rwanda genocide. The story of the hotel and its manager at that time, Paul Rusesabagina, was used as the basis of the film Hotel Rwanda. With the help of his wife, Rusesabagina bribed the Hutu militia with money and alcohol to keep them from killing the refugees in the hotel. He also managed to provide the refugees with food and water.
The four star hotel continues to operate. We sat by the now famous pool at Hotel des Mille Collines for cocktail hour and had a toast to Sepp, whose only curiousity was to know whether I was going to the hotel when traveling to Rwanda.
We'll be enduring an 8 hour bus ride back to Kampala tomorrow. We have tickets for the Jaguar bus, which promises to be less crowded, more comfortable and leave on time. I'm not holding my breath that any of these promises will be true. Happy travels!
