We motored on to Mountain Zebra NP, more game and another nice site. Nothing could dampen our spirits………….or so we thought. As we sat there sipping our drinks, playing uno and watching the storm approach we remembered to peg the awning as we listened to the wind rush through the trees towards us. We did not expect a hurricane. Cards went flying, chairs went flying, the roof tent when flying, "lets hold onto the awning just in case", the wind got stronger and the rain hit aswell. We jumped in Kal and watched the storm unfold as the wind got even stronger and so did the rain. Then came the hail, our tent was taking a battering. We positioned Kal as a windbreak but we weren't confident of the tents durability. It was secured as best we could and full of our gear, so we were riding on hope and a bit good karma (we thought we'd dished out our fair share in Cape Town). All of sudden there was a loud crack, "please don't let that be the tent pole". Unfortunately it was. With the other pole straining under the extra load it was only a matter of time before it too broke, so we were left with no choice but to initiate damage control, pull the poles and hope our gear and bedding didn't get too soaked. Cold and wet, and tinned curry on the menu before some running repairs to get us through the uncomfortable damp night ahead.Things were starting to go pear shaped. It rained all night and although by morning the sun was back shining, we'd had a gutful of Mount Zebra and decided we should move on.
