There was such a good atmosphere in Alexanderplatz when we arrived in Berlin. The pubs were busy, the main square had buskers and street artists, and everyone seemed quite laid back and friendly. Since we arrived later in the day, we decided just to change and head straight for a night out. After dinner we had drinks in Alexanderplatz and later found a rooftop bar with techno music and overpriced drinks that was very cool and good fun. We finished the night with a dance off to cheesy music back on the square. From Papa Roach to Ricky Martin via YMCA. Seriously.
This morning was rather hairy for Luisa and Heather, and touch-and-go for a while for Lucy. A hangover had eventually caught up with them. :( Lucy and I were reasonable enough to head into the city to see some hotspots whilst Luisa and Heather nursed their hangovers. The two of us walked from the Reichstag in the west of the city, through Brandenburg Gate and back to Alexanderplatz. It's been bloody roasting in Berlin today and we were melted by the time we made it back to the hostel.
We picked up the invalids after a fifteen minute pitstop and made our way to join Fat Tire's Bike Tour of the city. Our tour guide was another cool, kinda loud, hipster American lady called Tanya, who had a German mother and grandmother and was so knowledgable about the city and it's history. A little less than six (six!!!) hours later we finished the tour having seen: Checkpoint Charlie, The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, The Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, Victory Column, Potsdamer Platz, Angela Merkel's House... Annnnd we had fun cycling round the roads and parks. Annnnd we learned all about the First World War, Second World War, and Cold War and how badly they affected Berlin. Annnnd we had an hours stop in a beer garden en route. Ideal way to spend the day in Berlin!
On to Prague tomorrow, and the earliest start yet. One week down, two to go! :)
