Vikki: Today I got to legally speed - the toll roads let you drive at 130km/hr. At first it seems really fast but you soon adjust and then anything less seems really slow. Navigating toll booths is somewhat stressful. Having your credit card declined and then no other option to pay with, other cars lining up behind you honking horns wondering whats taking so long can make you panic. But hey we got there and have learnt coins is the best way to pay. The toll roads make quick work of a car trip, so it seemed like we were in Andorra in no time, for a brief one night stop on our way to Barcelona.
Andorra is located in the eastern Pyrenees mountain range, bordered by Spain and France. We reached an altitude of 2,500m. This weekend the road will be closed for the Tour de France. Our typical bad timing with sports events means we'll miss an opportunity to see part of the race. Raj was pretty impressed by what the cyclists actually have to endure with a perspective very different from watching the race on TV.
As for Andorra itself, it's very much like Queenstown, a ski town with loads of adventure sports, beautiful stone buildings and lots of shopping. It certainly has changed since I was here 20 years ago, and was a nice surprise to drive into. Almost makes you wish you could come back in winter to experience it then. We spent a little time perusing shops and wandering the streets. It's a tax free country but with most shops being designer labels, nice to look only. Diesel was really cheap as is alcohol so we've stocked up for Barcelona, which we head tomorrow. A short car trip (no tolls thankfully) and then we arrive at our next camp ground, by the beach, ready for all things Spanish.
