We have been working or way down the East Coast of South Africa for the past few days. As the title of the post suggests the drivers are equal to the worst we have had to deal with on the trip. Ten fatalities on one five hundred kilometer stretch in four days according to the local rag yesterday. Staying out of trouble on the roads for the remainder of the trip is keeping me focused. The drivers take unbelievable risks mainly during overtaking and at highway speeds of one hundred and twenty kilometers per hour plus. Whilst the roads in South Africa are better than the others they are still poor compared to ours in OZ.
Our progress south has taken us through the Home Lands or what is also called the Transvaal. These are the areas that the whites pushed the blacks into during the Apartheid years. Poor quality land that was b***** all good for anything else. Just like what was done to our own Aboriginals. It's very sad! The difference in South Africa is that it's so in your face. It’s on a massive scale that must shock, rather HAS shocked us. These poor barstards have stuff all. Mark my words, no good will come of this!
Other than the poverty, which isn’t unique to South Africa, the place bears little resemblance to the rest of the countries we have visited in Africa. Even with Kruger NP, it just doesn’t feel African. Somewhere along the line, South Africa lost the Africa.
