The road trip west from Skagway to the Alaskan Hwy takes you over the mountains of the Klondike trail. Only 3,000mtrs high but very nice.
The wildlife here comes with extremely sharp teeth so we found it prudent to invest in a gas powered portable marine horn and a can of pepper spray to deter any bears (or drug runners in Mexico). It will also be invaluable if I stumble whilst trying to outrun Gael if danger threatens. Although trying to spray the bear in the face while he has you by the throat would be challenging.
All the rubbish bins are bear proof and food lockers are provided for people camping in tents.
On the way south it is not uncommon to pass large numbers of tour buses converted to campers. These rigs tow a car and invariably only have two occupants. You can see upwards of fifty a day traveling to Alaska and double that for fifth wheelers. And this is a bad year for tourism according to the locals.
The North Americans like "things". BIG, new and thirsty things!!!
In Jasper we are trying to do plenty of the walks. We have been spending a lot of time in the truck up until the present and we are now enjoying being able to see the country up close and on foot. This part of the Rockie Mountains is quite stunning. A few more days here and then south towards Banff and then Glacier National Park.
