Day 96 and we are in Alexandria, Egypt's second largest city. We have arrived on Easter Monday (for the Coptic Christians) and the city is bustling with families heading to the parks and beaches for picnics, just like home on a Bank holiday.
We experienced a great day here; to me it was a city bursting with culture and colour. We journeyed through Mansheya Square, where we saw the bronze statue of Mohamed Ali the founder of modern Egypt, and then on to the Mosque of El Abbas, one of Alexandria's Islamic landmarks, characterised by its tall minarets and domes.
Across from the Mosque Square the Quait By Fort, built on the original site of the Pharos, which was Alexandria's ancient lighthouse and one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
We strolled around Montaza gardens, where we viewed the Royal Palace, no one is allowed inside except foreign dignitaries etc. The inside is supposed to be full of billions of pounds worth of gold, jewels, and the like, and is guarded 24 hours a day.
The final and very impressive end to our day was a visit to the Biblioteca Alexandria, with it's library depicting the architectural genius of the 21st century.
