The morning of the third day, many members of the 2019 Cohort set off on the infamous and interesting 2-hour walking tour of Munich (duration = 4 hours). Michael, of course, was our guide. We began at the Deutsches Theatermuseaum (outside) and headed off to the Diana Temple, the other side of which took the Cohort into the "old town" through the Englicher Garten (the large English Garden Park within Munich).
Points of note:
The river surfing on the Eisbackwelle. A very impressive sport.
The Feldhermhalle. This building was once a shrine to eight Nazis that Hitler felt needed to be honored. All citizens were required to salute the shrine when they passed it under penalty of arrest. After WWII, this was converted into an homage to those who stood against the Nazi regime.
The piece of the Berlin Wall that is erected by the American Consulate.
The Haus der Kunst, once an art museum to support Nazi art, now an institution to promote art in general.
…and, of course, the many churches we visited that were steeped with Bavarian history and breathtaking artwork.
The walking tour ended with lunch in the beer garden at the Viktalienmarkt (Munich Market Square).
Upon arriving back at the Eurostar Hotel, the 2019 Cohort said goodbye to Munich and boarded a bus to the Czech Republic.
