We left the beautiful house to start our 6ish hour journey down to Queenstown. The views along the way were amazing, so many lakes. One of the nicest was Lake Tekapo (in the picture), it's a bright blue colour due to glacial deposits. We also drove past Mount Cook, the highest mountain in New Zealand. Once we got to our hostel we discovered we were in the outside room, it was great fun walking in and out of the main building to shower! We had a wander around the town, it's really pretty. It's set between a lake and a mountain. It has a population of 10,000, but it's 30,000 at most times due to tourists! The hostel has free soup so we headed there for dinner and just chilled out, met a nice lad in our room from Newport!
The next day was Lucy's birthday! Vik and Rach sent her to the shower and quickly rearranged her bed with balloons, a banner and some pressies! Luce wanted to head up the mountain to see the views so we hopped on the gondola to the top where there was also some luging- that was fun! It's basically tobogganing and we got to wear cool safety hats too.
We headed to Fergburger for lunch which is renowned for being the best burger place in New Zealand, and it really is! Shame we didn't realise before we left that it's not a chain! After lunch we went to an ice bar, 'Minus 5', for birthday cocktails! It was really cool (pardon the pun). You get half an hour in the bar, that's plenty of time! It was actually less than -7! The glasses you drink your cocktails out of are made of ice, it's really really nice to drink out of ice. We don't like glasses anymore!!
It was a lads from the hostels 30th birthday too so a group of us went out that evening to celebrate the two birthdays, it was fun!
The next day, feeling a little rough, we got up and headed to Milford Sound. It's about a 5 hours drive from Queenstown so we stopped at a place called Te Anau for lunch. It's just a little town, nothing special, we had a curry tho- that was special! Mmmm. We eventually got to the hostel at Milford, it's a cute little place. We just relaxed, played some snakes and ladders and some cards!
In the morning we got a cruise up the sounds. It's really beautiful. Mountains on either side and lots of pretty waterfalls, at one point the captain drove right up to a falls and we got a little wet! The biggest mountain there is Mitre Peak, its pretty amazing. Just a shame it wasn't a sunny day, it was freezing! We got to see seals though which was cool.
After the cruise we headed back to Queenstown for another night. We had an extra passenger on the way back though! The guy who was in our room, Ben, was heading that way so we offered to take him, he had already booked his bus too which is a shame. He was from Texas and told us some funyn stories! Apparantly there's a gangster rapper who sells food out of the back of his car in texas. I
n the evening we met up with the lad who was in our room previously and just had a few quiet drinks before a reasonably early night.
