The Nile by Bike
A couple of months ago my friend Luke suggested I cycle down the Nile with him, you know, to see the pyramids and that. Well I was curious if a little sceptical, what about separatists? Or crocodiles? Or the roasting Arabian sun? I did a quick google search of Egypt only to find many of my doubts confirmed, finding a nice map the chaps at the foreign office had thought to draw up with a big orange swathe smeared across the proposed route and a corresponding key that warned: "avoid all but non essential travel!"
My parents were also concerned: "what about Yorkshire?" My dad mused, "the Dales are just lovely." Well it would be a little closer to home but still it didn't exactly have the same ring to it. At any rate Luke wasn't heading to the Dales, he was heading to the Pyramids and the more I thought about it the more irresistible a prospect it seemed.
Anyway long story short, call me crazy but I'm currently at Charles de Gaulle airport about to catch a flight to Cairo! I've got panniers at my feet and my trusty touring bike checked in to the holds, and that road, that dry, dusty sun baked road along the Nile awaits me.
I'll let you know how it all pans out so watch watch this space!
