After an awesome time in Pacific Harbour we decide it's time to get back on the road and continue are trip around the island. We decided to head to Fiji's capital Suva. Meeting the guys on Feejee experience and hearing what thier plans were in Suva we decided it could be a good stop as we liked the idea of visiting a school and helping out.
We check out of our hostel and ask about the local buses, but then our luck changed again and a taxi driver had to drive to Suva to collect some parts for his car and offered to take us for just a little more than the bus. So Hana enjoyed asking all the random local question as we were shouffer driven to our next destination.
We were looking forward to this stop as the lonely planet mentioned you had kitchen facilities so we could cook ourselves a lovely meal, yep that's right we preferred to cook than eat out. However our plan failed immediately when we realised our hostel was in the middle of nowhere and we didn't have enough goodies really to make a nice meal. We did the usual check in procedures and was shown to our room. It was pretty cool like a little home, had a little commuinty area with beds all around and a little kitchen area but with nothing to cook food on or with. Good job we weren't counting on cooking. However we still tried to save some pennies and Hana went to ask for a kettle so we could indulge in some yummy noodles. This was the start of our crazy night.
After awhile housekeeping brought the kettle but Hana hadn't returned, so I went to find her just encase she was waiting..... But when I found her she had made a friend, a little 2yr old Indian child. She was being pulled all around to play with things, spending a lot of time on the pool table just throwing balls in the pockets. After 10mins the mum invited us over for a drink to say thank you. We felt we should and didn't want to turn down an offer of a free drink. We sat down with the three friends and talked lots, they continued to buy us drinks and brought bar snacks for us to eat with them. After a few hours it turned a little weird with then suggesting that we left our hostel the next day and stayed with them. We thought at the time it wouldn't matter too much if we spent the day and night with then, be cool to head to town with locals. Then they started talking bout spending the rest of our time in Fiji with them, going on a family holiday with them staying with there families on their floors. We didn't need to worry bout paying, they would take care of everything. Then it got worse saying we could look after her kid while she napped, be like sisters and kids aunties. She then said we should come back for her wedding, they would fly us and buy us outfits. Then she told us she was marrying a guy from Oz and we could live with her in Oz too. We started to freak out but never had any alone time to talk and we couldn't leave. We tried to make up excuses but she had an answer for everyone. We continued drinking become more and more involved in their lives until we were both so tired and a little drunk and finally managed to escape instead of following into town to our dorm. However plans were all set and they were collecting us the next morning. Back at our room we both laughed but were freaked out and tried to work out a plan. The only solution was .............
The following morning we awoke early me having had a lot of sleep but Hana had a restless night of worry. We set our plan to action, we were up extremely early and were already to check out way before allocated time but you see our simple solution to our adopted Indian family crisis was to just run and hide. Simple and effective, maybe not so kind but working on probability we won't ever meet again.
All checked out with an hour till pick up time we ventured out to catch the local bus. Every minute felt like an hour, we were paniking they would arrive early and see us trying to escape. Disarster the first local bus passed and it was fully so it whizzed past living us in shock! What are we going to do, we only had 30mins now. We were going to have to use the money saved from previous day and order a taxi, but this meant another agonising wait.
Finally with only 10mins to spare the taxi arrived and we were whizzing off to Suva town. We had planned to visit the market and see the area, but scared we may bump into the family we went straight to the bus station and jumped on the bus leaving for Raikraki. The others in our room were going to meet us there.
We arrived in Raikraki after a trip down memory lane and Bolivia bus journeys, however the journey was only 5 hours and there were no landslides but still there was no Tarmac!! Neitherless it was no where near as bad as we had worked ourselves up for after hearing rummours from other travellers, I suggest they try some of our journeys!! As soon as we arrived we were harrassed by a taxi driver, it's so hard to set a plan when someone is constantly trying to sell you something in your ear. We knew the hostel was far out and possibly had a kitchen, we desperately wanted to get some supplies but being rushed we had are taxi already and I had to wait with the bags while Hana shopped which is never easy.
Arriving at our hostel we understood how far out we truely were, but it was lovely. Right by the beach with a lovely view and swimming pool, some more relaxation time!! Our room was ok and typical it did have a kitchen, shame we didn't have the food. Being the true little backpacker friends we are thou we set about rashing our money and sharing and saving everything. We brought main meals and shared, we never completed one me to ourselves so there was more than enough. We woke up late so we had tuna pasta for brunch and kept activity low, it was ashame someone stole our crisps!! Most of the days were spent sunny ourselves or cooling down in the pool. One day we did decide to be a little adventurous and went down to the beach hut and hired the free kayaks, we had planned to paddle to the surrounding islands but.... There was strong currents that mention we went nowhere. Hana attempted to go snorkelling but we were a little too consioncious of the hugh sharks we had seen only days before, not seeing the bottom did shake us up a little. So after a good hour of just messing around we gave up and decided that relaxing was the best way to spend our time. We did meet some others staying in Voli voli who enjoyed playing games in the pool and come the evening we all enjoyed play some international card games with a few drinks.
However three days passed quickly and it was soon time for us to head on round to sort out a trip to the islands. It wasn't the easiest of bus journeys back we had to catch two buses, the heat was horrible and made worse by the fact this was a popular bus route and the bus was crammed with people so we definate got up close to the locals. The opened window air conditioning did help and the secnary was awesome but it wasn't long before we were back in the capital.
We collected some supplies for the islands before finding a taxi back to Mamas, and boy we found a character in our taxi. He was a true Fijian who just wanted to sell drugs to backpackers and I'm sure smoked far too much wacky backy while driving but he was friendly and taught us interesting things.
Back at Mamas she gave us hugh hugs and sorted out our trip to the islands, felt like being at home. Then it was off to bed ready for our island trip.
