Sunday morning woke up eager to see the F1 race, the sky was heavy and leaden rain looked certain. I headed out to catch the bus to take me to the circuit. I had been given 3none English speaking taiwanese people to babysit to make sure they got to the circuit- tolerance of this was pretty low after 3 months of only looking after myself. Anyway everything took 3x as long much to my frustration! We got there I pointed them in the right direction and off I set. I started to queue up to get in and immediately was given a beer- good start. Got to my seat and a crowd of people gave me more beer- great! This group of guys had been out all night and were hammered, one of them suggested trying to get into the pit lane- why not I thought? Worth a try what's the worst that'll happen? Off I trotted with a drunk kiwi, in the direction of the pit tunnel, phone glued to ear trying to look like I was busy in a group of other media types we breezed through... Easy as that I couldn't believe it, we were in!! It quickly became apparent that not only was the kiwi drunk, but a total arse, to the point he was embarrassing to be with ( yes you can imagine how bad if he was able to embarrass even me)... Anyway as quickly as I'd met him I binned him off and found my spot in the media box, over looking the start finish line with a perfect view of the Ferrari, and garages! I took a press pack, and my eyeliner ( the closest thing to a pen I could find) and tried to look inconspicuous?!! Pretty quickly I became one of the press bunch chatting away, trying not to blow my cover, enjoying the refreshments and the amazing view. I watched all the tyre changes with a Birdseye view, could see into the ferrari and Mclaren pit wall communication booths, had a big screen opposite, the only down side was the lack of audible commentary- guess you can't have it all!! After the race finished all the press gang filtered out for the conference and driver interviews... Off I trotted, Alonso, Webber, Lewis, Micheal, Nico!! Next stop parc ferme, where I bumped in to Jake, DC, and Eddie! My pic of DC didn't turn out do well:-( by this time the garages were all packing away and people were filtering out. Time to make my exit, actually more challenging that getting in, but made if eventually. Blagged a free taxi ride home with a group of Auzzies- all together a great blah filled first F1 experience- unsure quite how that one will be topped?!
