Wilson's World Tour
Since our last postcard we travelled back to Lima and stayed at our favourite Hostel with Mauricio, Charlotte and Danielle (the mastiff) I had a bad case of the trots, it took me a day or two to recover, only after i sent Mrs Wilson out to get some super strength imodium !.
We then had the dilema of how to get to Equador, the bus journey takes three days, but is cheap or we could've flown but at a cost of about $300 per person. As a compromise we decided to stagger the journey and stop at various places on the way.
We are currently in the fishing / Surfing town of Huanchaco, its great because at last we have some sun again ! This place if famous for the fishermans 'boats'. They are called Cabillitos, totally made from reed and basically look like big surfboards with a really pointed bow. When their comming back in with their catch, they surf the waves back in. Apparantly pictures have been found on 2500 year old pottery depicting the same fishermen (well their great great etc grand parents) on the same style boats. So maybe they were the worlds first surfers ?.
Feeling inspired Sam and i hired boards, wetsuit and a very patient instructor. We started off by going for a run !, loads of stretching and finally lots of rolling around in the sand. We were now prepared (apparantley) and took to the water. It was a little disconcerting as it was quite rocky under the water, so it made even more sense to stay on the board ! We both did really well and managed to catch at least two or three good waves each. After about an hour in the water i couldnt do anymore, as the ribs which i broke on my stag do were killing me from lying on the board !
Tomorrow we have a bus booked to Tombres, which is a border town of Peru and Equador, its supposed to be a bit of a hole so we arrive at about 0700 the next morning and hope to get a bus out the same day, probably to Cuenca, which is regarded as one of Equadors best examples of colonial splendour.
