Well, I finally made it to Thailand, with a few mishaps on the way. Sorry for the lack of blog last week but after the week I've had you'll see why. Still on the up now and just about to undertake Trek number 3 of my trip. I reckon I'm addicted now.
So to begin, I finally made it out of Delhi last wednesday. That is before the city gave me one last hurrah to take with me. It had been raining the night before I left. Ironically I thought this might clear away some of the crap form the streets of Paharganj. Alas this wasn't the case and I stepped out onto the main bazaar to encounter a thick brown sludge that was covering the street. So along with my fellow residents I waded off through it searching for breakfast. (Not a huge problem I hear you cry??) Well it wasn't until a rickshaw, going to fast for my liking, sped past covering the populace with the sludge. Great! At this point I just had to laugh to myself and must have looked a bit weird but hey India makes you do strange stuff. So after killing 7 hours I was in Delhi airport ready to finally leave the place. As I boarded the plane I was tempted to give Delhi the finger, but I reckon the lady immediately behind me may have taken offence.
My flight to Bangkok involved a stopover at Singapore for 4 hours. I was slightly concerned about what I was going to do for 4 hours at 5am in the morning but all fears were allayed. Singapore Airport is wicked, with free internet, nice surroundings, helpful staff and good restaurants. I could've stayed longer but off to Bangkok I went., I made a mental note to arrive for my flight to OZ at Singapore a couple of hours earlier than I needed.
Arriving in Bangkok was a shock to the system. India was bloody cold when I left so I had jeans and fleece on when I got here. Totally wasn't ready for the 30c heat that hit me. It made a welcome change though. So I got to my hotel room, whipped out the shorts form the bottom of my bag and blinded the local populace with my super white legs. The guest house was just off the Khao San Road and as a result was much quieter and had better restaurants. One particularly one was a British themed cafe called "Oh my Cod". I had to go in after reading the name. What strauck me though was how boring the menu was. Everything either came with Gravy, was deep fried or had mash potato. I hastened off to eat something local and cheaper. I've got a bad feeling that in a few years Thailand could come to resemble the Costa Del Sol.
The next couple of days were mean't to be spent seeing the sights of Bangkok, this however turned into me sightseeing my local room getting intimately acquainted with the toilet. I reckon it was India getting its final revenge on me, but I didn't leave my room for the next two days and just watched the movies on TV. Still I'm going back to Bangkok on the way to the Islands so I will do the sights then.
After 2 days of hotel room exhile, I finally managed to jump on bus to a town called Kanchanaburi. It's a quiet little town with loads of guesthouse along the river bank, although it's better known as being the sight of the River Kwai bridge. I managed to get a room that in a floating river house with amazing river views (suprisingly) for $3 a night. The bridge is a lot smaller than I thought it would be but you can walk accross it or take a little tourist train. I opted to walk over as you get a chance to take stock of the bridge. You can still see the bomb damage on the bridge and the museum detailing its construction and the plight of the POW's was brilliant. It was such a chilled place I could've stayed there for a week, but I ran into my neighbours on the boat and this persuaded me to leave. One was a German chap who ignored all attempts at conversation and woke me up in the middle of the night making strange noises next door. At first I thought he was just just getting his freak on but he was by himself. He then started wandering around on the deck talking to himself and punching his legs. I tried not to laugh when he walked back to his room and went Arse over the step into his room. I made every attempt to avoid him the next day thinking that he was a complete looney toon. So with that odd interlude it was off to Chaing Mai
Just got into Chiang Mai today and I'm heading off on a trek tomorrow for 3 days. Thought that would be a different way to spend my birthday. Sorry about the lack of depth in this blog. I realise you all wait on tenderhooks to recieve them ;-).
I'll upload the photos when I get back form the trek as they're be more to see by then.
Adieu mon amis
