Boarding the bus as our usual foursome, Joel & I headed to Spot-X surf camp & the girls stopped off for a night at Coffs Harbour. Arriving at the surf camp, we tucked into a lovely lunch that was provided for us & then got ourselves ready for our surf lesson. Upon looking at all the potential teachers we could have had, we spotted a few tasty surfer chicks. But as is typically our luck, we got put with Matt, who was a stereotypical surfer with scraggily blonde hair & said 'Dude' & 'Sweet' a lot! We grabbed our wetsuits & surfboards & headed down to the beach. We had to lay on our boards on the sand & practice our technique of laying on the board, paddling to catch a wave & then adopting the standing position. Easy when you're on solid ground!!
After a few exercises to warm up our muscles so not to get cramp, we headed out for the water. At least I think we did, by this time I didn't have my contacts in or my glasses on!! After fighting our way past some waves, we lay on our boards, waited for a crest of a wave to come behind us, started paddling, caught the wave, stood up & rode it back to shore......at least that's how it was supposed to go!! In between the 2-4 times I managed to stand up & ride the waves (some back to shore, others not) there were plenty of slips, falls & barrel rolls to contend with. As fun as it was, I still have a long way to go to become the next Kelly Slater.
Suitably knackered after our lesson, we tucked into a hearty dinner before heading out to the bottleshop to pick up vital supplies. En-route to get the beers in, we stopped off at a nearby driving range. Armed with buckets of golf balls & a selection of golf clubs, we started hitting away. The only difference with this driving range is that it is covered with hundreds of kangaroos. It made golf a whole lot more fun!!
Arriving back at surf camp, we soon got the games going for the evenings entertainment. We had a game of musical chairs & still fresh from my near victory in Rainbow Beach, I was fairly confident......I shouldn't have been! I was nowhere near to winning, so we'll move on! Setting up the table tennis table, we got working on a game of Beer Pong. It was Joel & I against two Germans, so the match up was billed as England vs The Third Reich. Each team has 10 cups, filled a quarter up with beer, placed in a triangle shape similar to pins on a bowling alley. Team members take it in turns to throw the ping pong ball across the table & attempt to land it in one of the oppositions cups. If it lands in one of your cups, you must down the beer before the game can continue. Once a team eliminates all the oppositions cups, the game ends & the losers must drink all the remaining cups of the winning team. I am pleased to announce that England ran out 2-0 winners!!
