well after finally shaking off a few days of manflu im back to business with keeping you guys up to date with my adventure across New Zealand.
We arrived in Wellington after a hefty 9 hour drive to be welcomed by choca-block traffic! ok we knew it was 5th November but we never expected them to be celebrating like we do! Wellington hosts one of the biggest and best Firework displays in the country as it is the capital city. we drive around for about 2 hours looking for a decent vantage point and somewhere to sleep for the night. We finally do find somewhere, a little bit away from the centre of Wellington but a beautiful location never the less with a private beach! we had also picked up some fireworks of ourselves to have our own little bonfire night celebration. we catch the display in Wellington then head back to the van for our own on the beach, bearing in mind it all sounds nicey nice, it is the middle of spring and wellington is the most blustery place on earth, its about 2 degrees! plus we have to watch out for penguins on the beach!!!
we wake the next day to glorious sunshine, but still cold, we plan on spending the day in Wellington each doing our own thing. i fancy a day around the Basin Reserve, Wellington Cricket Ground and having a look around the Cricket museum. I also manage to conker a personal goal i set myself with my old man! a certain cannon on top of a hill made me the happiest guy in Wellington! that night we booked to sail on the ferry across to Picton on the south island to start out south island adventure. The north Island has plenty to offer and is very unique to the south with the north been so volcanically active whereas the south is more picturesque.
we get an early start from picton after a rough crossing on the ferry! we drive to Kaikoura for the night. this place is so beautiful, its where the moutains meet the pacific ocean. this huge moutain range drops 2000ft straight into the ocean with Kaikoura tucked away behind them in a small bay! its also the best place to go whale spotting and swimming with seals. its so cold in Kaikoura, the moutains are all thick with fresh snow and the wind is penetrating! its a shame we only have a few hours though spent here because there is so much to do. i think i shall be paying a visit back here once we all go our seperate ways. we spend the night in a homely irish bar called the strawberry tree which had the most cosy open fire, perfect for the cold spring night which whistled around outside!
moring breaks and once againthe sun is shining but its still near zero degrees! our final day in the camper, we head off the christchurch to drop the van off! 10 days of living on top of 7 other people was coming to and end! thank god! however we all got on great and we all end up booking into the Base Hostel in Christchurch and all in the same dorm so where not that sick of each other! we all plan on spending a few days here to get things sorted out for the next 2 weeks, me, adam and marcel plan on getting another camper between 3 of us and heading out to check out the sights and sounds of the south island, i plan on trekking Franz Josef glacier, its a 2 day trek from top to bottom, staying in a small hut up the top of the glacier, i cannot wait for that! plus calling into queenstown to throw myself out of a plane again and probably a few bungy jumps! just a normal day in the life of an adrenalin junkie!
