For those of you who arent aware, the Phi Phi Islands are where the Leonardo Dicaprio film 'The Beach' was filmed so you can all picture how nice it is here. Lau and I had both been here before on a day trip but never stayed here, so the three of us got dropped off after our scuba trip and we headed off to find accomodation. After struggling with the bags in the mid day heat, I eventually found us a rather nice room equipt with air con right in the middle of all the action, so after checking in, we scrubbed up and headed out. Phi Phi is not as I imagined, I had heard reports before we came about it being over touristy and over priced and we found both these things were to be correct... we ended up paying almost double for a room than what we were used to paying (although a very nice room), and there was sooo many 'younger' people here on what seems like a very party party island! As you can see by the date we arrived it was indeed St Patricks day which probably explained why it looked so crazy when we arrived, and every bar was offering everything from free BBQ's to free buckets to get you in to their bars to celebrate, so naturally us being us we went straight to the first bar with the free BBQ! We only had to wait around 10mins before all three of us were 2 beers and 4 chicken skewers each down! We then headed to the beach where we saw another bar offering free buckets and a free BBQ... it would be rude not to really, only the chilli's that were on these chicken skewers were the biggest I've seen, but as we were now on our way to feeling a little tipsy we stupidly kept eating them until our mouths were so hot we started dribbling uncontrolably! After another few free buckets the entertainment started which consisted of limbo dancing under a pole of fire, skipping with a rope of fire and jumping through fire hoops... with drunken foriegners around this was a recipe for disaster, so guess who was first up.... yep Laura! To be fair she did well, then as she got braver she started crabbing under the fire pole, I am however happy to say she got away unscathed! The following day was eaten up with relaxing on the beach and snorkeling so nothing much to report... The third day we took a short walk over to another beach called Long Beach which was suposed to be quieter and with an even better ocean to swim, upon walking over we got caught in a little storm so we took cover whilst it passed, with in 10mins it was brilliant blue skys again and we continued our walk. We arrived at Long Beach around mid afternoon so the three of us filled the rest of the day with the usual of relaxing, playing frizby (my new favourite sport) and snorkeling. As the sun went down, the tide pushed right out so we were able to walk out in to the bay and around the cove back to our place rather than the way we came which was over the hills. Later that night we decided to go for dinner a a restaurant we saw on the seafront offering a free salad bar with anything you ordered, so Lau and Aim both had fish and prawns and I had a fish curry, we then got to the funny part of the night! On the beach infront of the resturant were the usual fire throwers, skippers etc etc.... after watching them for an hour or so, one of them asked Amy to go and join him, so Amy being Amy was right up there in a FLASH, as she walked up he handed her a chain in each hand but they were not lit so she was safe, Laura actually then said to me 'they wont light the chains so she'll be fine', then as we turned the chains were alight and she started walking on the stage swirling the chains with fire on the end around her head! She had been going about 10 seconds when they got tangled up and ran down her front in a big puff of flames! The guy ran on to see if she was ok, which she was! As soon as we saw she was fine we couldnt stop laughing at her, she came back to us wafting her hair as the flames had singed the ends off... it was so flippin funny, only Amy would do that. We asked her why he lit it as it seemed a little dangerous for someone with no experience, and she said because he told her she could!! lol! After this we had a few more beers and went to the beach party's, we made sure Amy stayed well away from the fire though.
The following day was the day we were leaving to head to Koh Lanta. Amy was up early for a half day island/beach hopping tour before catching the 4pm ferry, we'd already been on the island tour on a previous holiday so whilst Aim went on her trip we headed off on the 1:30pm ferry to sort out a room before Amy arrived. x
