From the Cameron Highlands the bus to KL was around 4 hours and so we arrived at around 1pm, we were lucky as the bus dropped us off in Chinatown which was where we were staying so it was only a short walk around the corner to our guest house. This was the first time since India we had pre booked our accomodation so we didn't have the hassle of looking for a room, well actually our friend Ben who we met in Langkawi was already staying here so it was him who booked it for us at a new place called Monkey Inn. It was a really nice new place with breakfast included, it also had a lounge/movie room upstairs for you to chill out in which turned out to be a welcome escape from the city heat and humidity. After checking in we relaxed for a while and arranged via the internet to meet our friends Rob and Chris (who we travelled with through Thailand, Laos and Vietnam) later that night at the Petronas Towers as they were also in KL. We sorted out the tubes we needed to catch and off we went to meet them, only when we got there we didnt realise the size of the place and as we hadn't said a exact location to meet we couldn't find them which was really dissapointing... so to cheer ourselves up we had a KFC! The shopping mall at the bottom of the towers is by far the biggest and best mall we've ever seen, it's over 6 floors high and has every shop imaginable, not what I expected from an Asian mall.
The following day was Sat 04.04.10.... the day of the qualifying session for the Formular One so I was excited! All five of us got up around 8.30am had breakfast and caught our train and bus to the race track in Sepang... we arrived there at around mid day and took in the atmosphere of the day before taking our position on the hillstand for the qualifying session. Befor the F1 cars came out there are 2 or 3 other races before hand which were smaller cars, so the five of us sat in the blazing sun watching these until 4pm when the big boys came out. In this time before they came out we met up with Dave and Kiki (the couple we had been with since Langkawi), and all seven of us went for some lunch in the main stand... it was walking here we saw a lot of empty seats (as it was only qualifying day) in the stand at the end of the pit straight, so we said that after lunch if they were still free we we would try and sneek in there... so we did! And its a good job for two reasons... 1, it started to rain so we stayed dry, and 2, BECAUSE I WAS ON TV!!! Haha! When I was in the stand I saw myself on the big screen and they zoomed right in on me but I wasn't sure if it was the actual tv cameras, it wasnt until I got back to the hotel at night I had messages from friends back home saying they saw me on t.v!! All I can think is they wanted to show the best looking guy in there and that just happened to be me! When the actual qualifying session started it was so exciting and so flippin loud, it's so loud you can't even hear the person next to you speak (which was a nice break for me) haha, only joking Lau!.. and with the rain it made it all the more interesting. After the qualifying was done, it was back to the hotel for a early night as we were back to the circuit the following day for the actual race. The next day we arrived at the track around the same time, only today was much more busy... we arrived just in time to see the main drivers from each team being flown in by private helicopters to the autograph signing sessions they do before the race. We weren't sad enuf to queue for autographs but we did stand in the area they walked around and saw all the stars before the race. After that we headed for our position on the bank to watch the race only to be stopped on the way by some brits and ozzys having a bbq outside, so me and Lau sat with them for the next hour eating and drinking for free, it was so nice of them to let us join them... maybe it was because they saw me on t.v the day before cuz im famous now!! We eventually sat down on the hill about 3pm and watched the Malaysian Red Arrows do an air show over head before the race, it was then time for the race! The start of the race was so good and the noise was unbelieveble, especially when Hamilton was doing so well... it's was amazing to be there and the atmosphere was really good but only around 1hour later it was all over, Vettel won and Webber came second... I would of liked to see Hamilton win but there's always next year! As it was so busy on race day, it took twice as long to get back that night, so I made it just in time to see Man U get beaten by Chelsea (bad times)!
It wasn't until another full day of relaxing in the hotel and watching films that we decided to explore the city and to go up the Petronas Towers. The Petronas Towers are the two towers in the city that are joined by a bridge on the 45th floor, these towers were until only a few years ago the tallest buidings in the world and if you get up early enough, you can get a ticket (for free) to go up the towers and walk across the bridge to get a view of the city... but you have to get up early as they only give out 1500 tickets a day, so like real troopers we were there at 8.30am queuing for our ticket which we got around 1hour later. Our time to go up the towers was around 1pm so we killed some time shopping around the mall and walking around the gardens of the towers. We were then into the lift shooting up 40 odd levels to the glass walk bridge for our 15mins of viewing and photo's... it was an amazing view of the city and a great way to finish our time in KL. That night it was much of the same, relaxing, watching films and eating as the following day we were heading out of KL on a night bus back up to the north east of the country to the Perhintian Islands. x
