Today we arrived in the Jervis bay area which had been recommended to us by friends.
We checked into a motel with a sea view on a warm and sunny afternoon and then headed off for a walk along the sea front. Our first stop was shark net bay a lovely small cove with White sand and turquoise waters. The only think that spoilt it was spotting a rabbit dead and half buried in the sand. That was very sad :-(
We continued along the path passing very few people which made us feel like we had the place pretty much to ourselves, in contrast to some of the beaches further North.
we were staying in a village called Huskisson which was very quaint, only a couple of little shops and delis like Husky's bakery, Husky's ice creams and Husky's BWS. The bakery was where we had our first croissants of the trip that tasted vaguely as they should!
The next day we decided to hire bikes so, after picking up a packed lunch we headed off, on a muggy morning to sanctuary point, a 12 kilometre bike ride away. En route we stopped to check our maps and a lovely elderly couple came to talk to us. I still can't get used to how friendly people are here!
Anyway, we got their life story and they told us how they had visited the Uk about 20 years ago. They also thought it was fantastic that they would be able to watch the Royal wedding and Wimbledon live! We the received advice on our drive to Melbourne and were told we needed to be careful driving as the road down is 1 lane only and quite bendy in places!
Other than this our ride was relatively uneventful other than the chain of my bike coming off and me almost falling off. Luckily, Stephen came to my rescue and put the chain back in place and we continued on our way, much of the route being downhill which was nice.
Anyway, what is there to tell you about Sanctuary point? Sadly not a great deal. It seemed to be something of a nature reserve and we encountered a group of several Pelicans swimming in the sea and a man gutting a fish (lovely). That was about it.
As the sun had come out by now, we decided to cycle to one of the many beaches in the area, returning largely the way we had come. Unfortunately of course this meant predominantly up hill. As I puffed and panted up one of the longer hills, a man in his 60's also on a bike pedalled alongside me and explained that the hills get easier with practice! Apparently he used to struggle up this particular hill on foot but now he races his wife up there on the bike. After the brief moral support he cycled past me at speed and I soldiered on to the top, a sweaty mess in the end!
Eventually we got to the beach and had a well deserved rest for a few hours and picnic lunch. We also ventured into the sea but didn't swim as the signs were warning of rip tides, shame as the water was quite warm.
Later that afternoon after returning the bikes and washing off the sand we headed to the local bar called Husky's (there's a common theme developing here) for a refreshing beverage during Happy hour. Happy hour soon became about 4 very happy hours of late afternoon sun, planning our next stops on the way to Melbourne. The beer was flowing well an it was such a nice sea view it would have been rude to leave really. As is the way in a lot of pub's there was a raffle. Now, in my experience raffles usually include prizes such as a bottle of champagne or a box of chocolates. We entered and then discovered that the prizes were actually an assortment of different meats with first prize being a large number of steaks! What we would have done with this had we won is anybody's guess so I was secretly relieved when the prizes went to someone else!!
Anyway, that about sums out our 2 nights in the Jervis bay area. Would definitely return. Fantastic beaches, nice people, excellent ice cream.
