Today we arrived in Coffs harbour which in short was a disappointment. We had expected a small fishing village, sandy beaches and lots of restaurants. What we got was an average sandy beach, a big town, hotel miles from everything and very little to do. We ended up in the town's bowling club for lack if anywhere else to go (SW - where we had our cheapest round ever!! Less than 7 dollars for a beer and a wine).
Food was even harder to come by. We had been warned about eating Indian food in Oz but found what looked like a nice Indian restaurant and thought, what the heck. I can honestly say, worst meal I have ever eaten. Ordered a veggie byriani expecting it to come with a curry sauce as it does at home. What I got was overcooked rice, no spice whatsoever and no curry sauce. When I asked for the sauce they told me that byriani doesn't come with a sauce and, after i protested they reluctantly made me a daal which was not worth the wait either!!
So in short, the home town of Russell Crowe was not worth a visit! No wonder he moved to Hollywood!
The next day we moved onto Port Macquarie which we loved. We checked into a hotel on the harbour on a very hot afternoon. We decided to hit the beach straightaway so had a few hours there watching the surfers before heading back to the hotel for the gym. Stephen went for a swim and it wasn't long before an older couple got chatting to him. I was watching it all from the treadmill and was quite amused. Apparently they invited him to stay with them at their home in Hunter Valley, ooh err!!
We also discovered a drive in beer, wine and spirits shop when we were there which we thought was fantastic. It has an express lane and a browsing lane so, if you know what you want you go to the checkout and the guy loads your car up, you pay and leave. Alternatively, you can take your time in the other lane and then place your order. I told the guy on the checkout that I thought it was a brilliant concept and he said that it came about because Australians are too lazy to walk around a shop for beer!!
