We were a bit apprehensive about our bus journey in to Lima. This was thanks to Edgar (our tour guide) telling us the bus we had to get was really "dangerous"!We got our transfer from the hotel and were dropped off on the side of a highway in the middle of nowhere to wait for the "dangerous" bus.It was a bus that locals got rather than the almost private buses we had experienced for the rest of the trip.
Edgar flagged down a coach with Lima on the front and nervously we all jumped on.We had to search for a seat and ask big, fat, sweaty locals to move over so we could sit down.It might not have smelt the freshest but the bus was by no means dangerous.Edgar obviously hasn't experienced the number 38 bus from Dennistoun before!
We drove up along the coast through the dessert to Lima. As we approached we began to get excited as this was the final destination for our GAP adventure, and it looked like a big city so felt like we were back in civilization again (hot water and toilets for a start!).
We got to Lima and went out for our last dinner together to the shopping centre! We thought this was a bit of a random choice from the tour guide who had taken us to the most expensive restaurants in each town for the rest of the trip as he eats for free. However, the shopping centre is down by beach and looks out over the sea so it was a restaurant with a view (and still expensive by Peruvian standards!).
We stayed in the Miraflores district of Lima which is supposed to be a middle class area. There are a lot of offices and shops in this part of the city.We didn't really explore Lima very much as it was my (Hannah) turn for the Peruvian belly, which coupled with sickness at the same time meant I didn't want to stray too far from the nearest bathroom. If anyone has read the previous blog I blame Brian for letting me unknowingly order raw fish for dinner in Ica.
We said bye to the others on our tour thinking it would be strange without them after 45 days of being together. There were definite advantages and disadvantages to doing the trip but on the whole we had a great time and saw some amazing places. Thanks very much again to Andy, Lyndsey and Louise for the wedding vouchers which helped us with this trip!
We are on our own now and heading for Buenos Aires.
